WUJ Project Gotong Royong

First launched under the name "WUJ Kampung Clean-Up" from January to December 2019, "WUJ Project Gotong Royong" returns after a 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic as a revamped initiative which aims to provide assistance for the Orang Pulau community on Pulau Ubin in upkeeping their homes and courtyards.

Assisting our community

Today, only 20 residents remain on Pulau Ubin, a far cry from the 2,000 inhabitants who once resided on Pulau Ubin in the 1960s. The residents who remain have aged gracefully and have found it challenging to upkeep their beautiful kampung.

WUJ hopes to alleviate some of their burden by offering these residents the necessary manpower required to help keep their homes and courtyards clean and safe — at least once a month.

FAQ

Helpful Information on WUJ Project Gotong Royong

Who provides the logistics for the clean-up?

Some cleaning equipment will be prepared by WUJ and the residents, while additional tools such as rakes, trash bags and gloves will be provided by NParks. NParks' contractors will assist in the disposal of refuse collected.

What happens to the litter collected at the end of the clean-up?

Non-biodegradable litter will be placed into trash bags and compiled in a designated collection point. Leaf litter, branches and other natural litter will be thrown into the surrounding forests where it can decompose naturally.

What makes your clean-up different than the other groups that are already conducting clean-ups on the island?

WUJ Project Gotong Royong is the first clean-up of its kind that focuses entirely on providing assistance to the residents. Apart from taking care of their surrounding environment, participants are able to learn about Ubin's cultural heritage through social interactions encouraged between them and the residents.

Is your clean-up children-friendly?

Yes, it is. However, adult supervision is required at all times throughout the entirety of the programme.

Can my organisation collaborate with you for the clean-up as part of our community outreach or social bonding event?

Yes, you can. WUJ has organised several clean-ups with various individuals and organisations. Apart from the default monthly clean-ups scheduled, WUJ may —if available — conduct clean-ups to your organisation's availability.

Something popped up in the last-minute and I am not able to attend the clean-up. Am I able to withdraw?

Yes, you can. Do inform me of your absence either via WhatsApp or email and I hope that you may join us in future clean-ups.

How much is the fee to partake in the clean-up?

There is no fee for this event as it is an act of goodwill.
However, participants are to pay for their own bumboat fares and other forms of personal expenditures on the island.
